MacPrune v2.0: What It Does, From the People Who Built It

We built MacPrune, so we cannot review it and will not give it a score. What we can do is say plainly what v2.0 does: it shows you where the space on your Mac has gone and helps you remove what you do not need, by moving it to the Trash. It frees disk space. It does not promise a faster Mac. The rest of this page goes through each part, including the limits.

What MacPrune is for

A full disk is hard to deal with by hand because the big items are scattered: caches in the Library folder, old downloads, developer data, device backups, files left behind by apps you removed long ago. MacPrune gathers these into a few pages so you can see them, decide, and clean up.

The pages are Overview, Disk, Clean, Large Files, Apps, AI and Monitor. You can lay them out as top tabs or a sidebar, in a dark or light look, or follow the system setting.

Seeing where the space went

The Disk page draws a map of the disk in which every folder is a tile sized by the space it takes. There are also views by kind of content, by folder and by file type. The map is for looking only: nothing is deleted from it.

Large Files lists files above a size you set, biggest first.

Cleaning, in three groups

The Clean page runs one scan and sorts what it finds by how much care it needs:

• Safe to clean: User Caches, Browser Caches (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Arc and Edge), the Trash, System Logs, Xcode data and package manager caches.
• Review before cleaning: Large Files, Old Downloads (older than 90 days), Duplicate Downloads and Mail Attachments.
• Handle with care: iOS Backups and Docker data.

Everything you choose moves to the Trash after a confirmation. The space is freed when the Trash is emptied, and the app offers to empty it after a clean. The one exception is the Trash category itself: items already in the Trash are removed for good.

A note on duplicates. Duplicate Downloads finds the same content saved more than once in your Downloads folder. It is not a duplicate finder for the whole disk.

Apps, AI tools and the Monitor

Apps uninstalls an app together with its related files, and finds leftovers of apps you removed earlier.

AI shows the disk space used by AI tools: Ollama, LM Studio, Hugging Face, Cursor, Claude, ChatGPT and Codex, split into models, caches and app data. It also lists AI processes with their CPU and memory, GPU use and local server ports. You can quit a process or stop a local server from there.

Monitor shows live CPU, GPU, memory, disk, network and battery figures and the apps using the most CPU and memory, which you can quit. It includes a network speed test. A Mac Health panel in the menu bar shows storage, memory, battery, CPU and network.

What it does not do

• It makes no speed claim. Freeing space on a nearly full disk is useful, but we do not promise a faster Mac.
• It does not clean browser history or cookies. Browser cleaning covers caches only.
• It is not in the Mac App Store. You download it from macprune.com, and it asks for Full Disk Access so it can measure the whole disk.
• It does not work without ever going online. See the next section.

Privacy, stated exactly

Scanning and cleaning happen on your Mac. No file names, paths, sizes or scan results are sent anywhere, and there is no analytics, telemetry or crash reporting.

The app does connect to the internet for four things: to check for updates, to validate a Pro licence, to fetch its notice banner, and for the speed test when you click it.

How it is built, and what it runs on

MacPrune is built with Tauri: a core written in Rust with a web interface on top. It is not a Swift app and not an Electron app. It runs on macOS 13 and later, on Apple Silicon and Intel Macs.

Free and Pro

The free version scans everything. It cleans User Caches, Browser Caches and the Trash, AI caches, and leftovers of removed apps. It also removes up to 1 GB of large files per batch, uninstalls 2 apps per batch, and allows a few app quits per day.

Pro is a one-time purchase with no subscription, for one Mac per key. It removes those limits and unlocks every category. The current price is on the pricing page.
