Free Mac Cleaners in 2026: What to Look For

What macOS already gives you for free, the questions to ask of any free Mac cleaner, and exactly what the free version of MacPrune does and does not do.

MacPrune Editorial 4 min read

The best free Mac cleaner for most people is the one already on the Mac: the Storage page in System Settings, plus Finder. Start there. If you then want an app to do the looking for you, judge it on a few plain questions: what does the free version really remove, where do deleted files go, and what does it send off your Mac. We make MacPrune, so this is not a ranking and we have not run a test of other products. It is a guide to choosing, with our own free version described exactly.

What macOS gives you for free

  1. Open System Settings, then General, then Storage. Wait for the coloured bar to finish calculating.
  2. Read the Recommendations. You can turn on Empty Trash Automatically, which removes items that have been in the Trash for more than 30 days, and Optimize Storage, which removes films and TV programmes you have already watched.
  3. Below that is a list of categories such as Applications, Documents and Mail. Click the i button beside one to see what is in it. Documents has a Large Files tab and a Downloads tab, each sorted by size, with a Delete button.
  4. In Applications you can sort by size or by when an app was last used, and delete the ones you no longer need.

What you can clear by hand in Finder

  1. Downloads. Open the Downloads folder, choose the list view, and click the Size or Date Added column. Old installers and disk images are usually safe to remove once the app is installed.
  2. The Trash. Nothing is freed until it is emptied. Right-click the Trash in the Dock and choose Empty Trash.
  3. Your user caches. In Finder choose Go, then Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Caches. Quit your apps first. You can remove the contents of folders belonging to apps you recognise, and the apps rebuild what they need. Leave anything you are unsure of.
  4. Browser caches. Each browser has its own menu command for this. See how to clear the browser cache on a Mac.

That covers a large part of what any cleaner does. The gain from an app is mostly time and visibility: one scan in place of several folders, and a view of where the space went.

Six questions to ask of any free cleaner

  • Does the free version delete, or only scan? Look for a plain list of what is free before you install. A scan that ends at a payment screen has told you nothing you can act on.
  • Where do removed files go? Moving files to the Trash gives you a chance to change your mind. Deleting at once does not.
  • Does it show you every item before removing it? You should be able to open the list and untick things.
  • What does it send off your Mac? Read the privacy policy for analytics, telemetry and crash reports, and for whether file names or scan results leave the machine.
  • How is the paid version sold? A subscription and a single purchase are both fair, as long as the page says which it is before you pay.
  • Is it clear who makes it and how to remove it? Download from the maker's own site or the Mac App Store, and check that uninstalling is simple.

Claims to be wary of

Be careful with any tool that promises a faster Mac, shows alarming warnings about thousands of "issues", or counts ordinary caches as problems. Caches exist to save time and macOS manages many of them without help. Clearing them frees disk space for a while. It is a housekeeping job, not a repair.

What the free version of MacPrune does

MacPrune v2.0 has a free version and a Pro version. The free version:

  • scans everything, so you see the full result of the Clean scan and the Disk map whether or not you pay;
  • cleans User Caches, Browser Caches (Chrome, Safari, Firefox, Brave, Arc and Edge) and the Trash;
  • cleans the caches of AI tools and the leftovers of apps you removed earlier;
  • removes up to 1 GB of large files per batch and uninstalls 2 apps per batch;
  • lets you quit a few apps per day from inside MacPrune.

Pro is a one-time purchase with no subscription, for one Mac per key. It removes those limits and unlocks every category, such as System Logs, Xcode data, Old Downloads and Mail Attachments.

On the questions above: everything you choose moves to the Trash after a confirmation, and space is freed when the Trash is emptied. Scanning and cleaning happen on your Mac, and no file names, paths, sizes or scan results are sent anywhere. There is no analytics, telemetry or crash reporting. The app does go online to check for updates, to validate a Pro licence, to fetch its notice banner, and for the network speed test when you click it. It runs on macOS 13 and later and is downloaded from macprune.com, not the Mac App Store.

Which should you use?

If you clear space a couple of times a year, the Storage page and Finder are enough. If you would like one scan and a map of the disk, a cleaner app suits you better, ours or another that answers the six questions well. The free version of MacPrune is on the home page.
