5 Mac Productivity Apps Worth a Look in 2026
Five kinds of Mac app that help you get work done in 2026, what macOS already does for each without installing anything, and where MacPrune fits.
Which Mac apps help most with getting work done? In our view five kinds are worth having: a launcher, a window manager, a screenshot tool, something that quietens notifications, and a way to keep the disk from filling up. macOS covers part of each one already, so this guide gives the built-in way first and then names an app people often add. Check each app's own website for its current features and price before you install it.
1. A launcher: Spotlight, then Raycast
A launcher opens apps and files from the keyboard so you are not hunting through the Dock.
- Press Command-Space to open Spotlight.
- Type the first letters of an app or file name and press Return to open it.
- Type a sum such as
128*4to get the result in place. - Choose what Spotlight searches in System Settings > Siri & Spotlight (named Spotlight in newer versions of macOS).
Raycast is a third-party launcher that many people use in place of Spotlight. It suits you if you want extensions and more to do from the keyboard.
2. A window manager: built-in tiling, then Rectangle
Putting two windows side by side saves a lot of switching.
- Hover the pointer over the green button at the top left of a window.
- Choose one of the tile options to send the window to the left or right half of the screen.
- Pick a second window for the other half.
Rectangle is an open source window manager that moves and resizes windows with keyboard shortcuts. It suits you if you rearrange windows many times a day.
3. A screenshot tool: the Screenshot toolbar, then CleanShot X
- Press Shift-Command-5 to open the Screenshot toolbar.
- Choose to capture the whole screen, a window or a selection, or to record the screen.
- Click Options to choose where captures are saved and to set a timer.
- Click the thumbnail that appears in the corner to crop or mark up the capture.
For a quick capture, Shift-Command-4 lets you drag over an area. CleanShot X is a paid screenshot tool that suits people who capture and annotate all day.
4. Fewer interruptions: Focus
This one needs no extra app.
- Open System Settings > Focus.
- Choose Work, or add a Focus of your own.
- Set which people and apps may still notify you.
- Add a schedule so it switches on at the hours you choose.
You can turn a Focus on or off at any time from Control Centre in the menu bar.
5. Disk upkeep: Storage settings, then MacPrune
A full disk interrupts work at the worst moment: updates will not install and apps cannot save. Check it now and then.
- Open System Settings > General > Storage.
- Read the recommendations at the top, such as Empty Trash automatically.
- Click the info button beside a category to see its largest items and remove what you do not need.
What MacPrune adds
This is the one app on the list that we make. MacPrune v2.0 frees disk space. Its Disk page maps every folder as a tile sized by the space it takes. Clean runs one scan and sorts the results into "Safe to clean", "Review before cleaning" and "Handle with care". Large Files and Apps deal with big files and with uninstalling an app together with its related files. Whatever you choose moves to the Trash after a confirmation, and the space is freed when the Trash is emptied.
The Monitor page shows live CPU, memory, disk, network and battery, lists the apps using the most CPU and memory, and lets you quit them. We make no promise about speed: MacPrune shows what is using the machine and clears space. The basic version is free, and Pro is a one-time purchase.
Where to go next
Try the built-in way for a week before adding an app, and add only the ones you miss. You can download MacPrune for the disk part. Related guides: how to free up Mac storage, how to completely uninstall apps on a Mac and why is my Mac so slow.
